So, in order to carry out research for decades and centuries to come, scientists need to manufacture long-lived materials in space. That's what NASA is working on with the Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) at the University of Rochester.
In a study published last week in Nature Scientific Reports, the university, the National Ignition Facility and the University of Washington have developed a method to harness energy from the plasma around a small, millimeter-scale fusion reaction to produce plastic.
The researchers created a lithium target that's only a millimeter in diameter. When a super-powerful laser passes through it, the lithium targets a layer of xenon gas, and explodes. This gives off more than 100 megajoules (MJ) of energy. That's enough energy to power a car for a few hundred miles.
After it's created, the team can control the temperature, density and composition of the matter it creates, which is crucial for the creation of plastics. Unlike traditional methods that use tons of heavy machinery, the team uses a laser to make a mini-Reactor, and then the plasma it produces.
The plasma, which is made up of ionized matter, contains an important element to make plastics: silicon. The team’s team can build a reaction chamber from this plasma, and use it to create silicon into plastic.
